Guru Nanak and the Yasmin Flower

At Kartar pur Guru Nanak was busy in farming and spreading his gospel of one God and all the humanity should be treated as equal to one another. Every one must meditate in God's name. A Sikh arrived from Multan informed Guru Nanak how Sufi Fakir hold a big gathering every year. They make fool of ordinary people by celestial powers. This fair has just started again. The Guru welcomed the Sikh and asked him join the community by doing Sewa (voluntary work).

Next day the Guru asked Mardana we should go to Multan Mardana Said, "Guru ji we have just come back from journey lets rest for little longer." Guru Nanak smiled and replied " my dear good friend Mardana, life is very short and I have lot of work left to do as it is directed by my master the God."Mardana had no choice he picked up his mandolin and casually started to walk. "Wait for me Mardana," said Guru Nanak. After three days Guru Nanak and his companions arrived at the City of Multan. Guru Nanak made himself comfortable under the just outside the City. Guru Nanak asked Mardana start the music. Guru Nanak stared to sing the hymns. When people of Multan that Guru Nanak dev ji has arrived in Multan. They all stopped what ever they were doing and rushed to greet the Guru and pay their respect. The fair, which was being celebrated in side the city became man less and empty. This act of the public made the Fakirs very unhappy and mad. They said until or unless the Guru does not leave Multan, we will be ruined. All our disciples and devotees have deserted us for Guru Nanak. One old and wise Pir said it is not possible he has more followers than us. All those followers will go against us and will trough us out of the city. How can ask the Guru to leave and appear not be rude to the Guru. They thought of a plan.

They took bowl full of milk to the brim and presented to the Guru. This action of the Pirs brought a smile to Guru's face. The Guru asked the Pirs and Fakirs to sit along side him. Guru accepted the bowl of and at once understood what these holy men were suggesting. They were suggesting that Multan was already full of holy men and there was no scope for another holy man to stay there. Guru Nanak picked a Yasmin flower and added it to the bowl fill to brim with milk. The bowl did not overflow Yasmin flower just floated on top. In his own way Guru, without speaking told the holy men there is still a room for Holy man like Guru Nanak in the City.

Pirs understood what Guru Nanak was trying to tell them. "There is never enough of goodness"

"If you are a holy man then why are you dress like a family man" asked the Pirs. I only dressed as a holy man for a special cause, which the God had directed me to do. Now that is complete, I am free to dress as a family man. You all have given up the world yet you still have to depend on these common people for you living. You should help these common people not deceive them of their lively hood.

Pirs and fakirs agreed with Guru Nanak paid respect to the Guru. After staying few days in Multan Guru Nanak came back to Kartarpur.
